Eucalypt species are all highly intolerant of competition from weeds. Adequate weed control (until canopy closure) is essential in reducing the competition for nutrients within a plantation.  Weed control will be performed at different stages of plantation development.

Timing of weed control can be either pre-planting or post-planting or a combination of both.  The aim is for a weed free zone of at least 1m around each tree for the first 12 to 18 months following planting.

The economic and environmental value of the operation must be judged before performing post plant weed control.  To assist in this evaluation, GPFL   graphically identify the severity of infestation and use this as a base for the Management decision in determining if and what type of spraying will be necessary.

Weed control can be achieved chemically, mechanically or a combination of both.    The appropriate method will depend on the following site factors:

The spectrum weeds to control and their development stage

Soil type and moisture content

Climatic conditions, and topography

Proximity to water courses
